Purpose: Compare average daily water use per capita in the United States with other countries and develop awareness of water consumption
BACKGROUND FOR THE TEACHER
The United States is one of the largest water consumers in the world. The bar graph below compares daily per capita water withdrawal in some countries. The United States uses the largest amount of water. More than 1,000 gallons is withdrawn per capita everyday in this country (Food and Agriculture Organization of the UnitedNations (FAO)).

TEACHER GUIDE
The purpose of this activity is to enhance students’ skills in interpreting bar graphs. The worksheets use data on daily per capita water withdrawal in 10 countries, including the United States. The data was obtained from the AQUSATAT program prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organizations of the United Nations.
